What is Corrective Exercise?

Corrective exercise is a whole-body approach used to correct how the body moves. Muscles work in pairs and when these are imbalanced they can alter joint mechanics, causing injury.  Corrective exercise is a method of treating injuries by correcting the problem that caused it. It will also improve posture and athletic performance significantly

How is Corrective Exercise Different from Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is often an acute response to an injury where exercises are given to target the area where the pain is located. Often, these exercises are localised correcting just the problem with tools like thera-bands. Corrective exercise is a whole body approach looking at the way the whole body moves and correcting this. With corrective exercise, a gym program is given and exercises generally include a long-term plan and weighted exercise.

With corrective exercise a person will also get fitter and in shape. Instead of just correcting the acute problem these programs treat the whole body which is ideal if there is more than one injury. These programs will also prevent injuries in the future as well as correcting posture and improving athletic performance.

What We Can Help With

As a corrective exercise specialist, I can help correct the muscular imbalances that lead to injuries. Online corrective exercise works best for certain conditions.

General Back pain

My journey into corrective exercise started with a focus on lower back pain. It has remained a key part of my work ever since. Whether you’re dealing with a herniated disc, muscle imbalances, lordosis, or kyphosis, I can create a personalized program just for you. I also specialize in fixing movement patterns that lead to back pain and offer effective strategies for managing scoliosis.

Herniated Discs

Herniated discs respond particularly well to corrective exercise programs. Before I established Emmafit360 online, I worked in an osteopathy clinic specialising in herniated disc treatments. While the clinic offered treatments like traction, ultrasound, mobilization, and various injections to manage symptoms, I found that corrective exercise programs led to much faster recovery. These programs focus on improving flexibility, restoring hip movement, and improving movement patterns, which are crucial for treating herniated discs.

Tendon injuries including Tennis elbow

I love helping those with tendon injuries and have a very high success rate in treating them. We can help identify the exact tendon and movement causing the issue and develop a targeted program to fix it. I can also teach you the theory behind these treatments, so you can prevent future injuries and maintain your tendon health.

Knee pain

Corrective exercise is great for knee pain. Often conditions such as meniscus tears, patella femoral syndrome, and tendinopathies are a result of imbalances and incorrect movement patterns elsewhere in the body. My approach includes using weighted exercises to quickly correct imbalances. I can help you improve gait and rebalance strength quickly meaning you’re likely to be pain-free faster than just doing localised banded exercises that are often prescribed by physios. My corrective exercise programs will also help to strengthen muscles in the long term to prevent reoccurrence.

SIJ pain

As someone who has personally struggled with sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain, I understand how easily it can be misunderstood and overlooked. However, I believe it is highly treatable. I can help you identify the root cause of your SIJ pain and develop a personalised program to address and correct it.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain is something I can usually help with. Online corrective exercise is great for tendon injuries, and impinged shoulders, and for stabilising joints that tend to dislocate.

Some shoulder injuries are much better to see someone in person including injuries from accidents, nerve damage, bursitis or thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS).

General hip pain

Impingement, snapping hips, and wear and tear are common issues that I can help address with a tailored exercise program. I can work with you to identify potential causes of your discomfort and provide a plan to improve your condition.

For conditions like bursitis, I can offer general advice, but seeing a practitioner in person may be necessary. The same applies to severe wear and tear, where direct professional assessment is often required.

Foot pain and Plantar fasciitis

Sprains strains, tendon injuries, and plantar fasciitis. I can help you figure out what’s going on and can usually help you get better.

Ehlers Danlos

Living with hypermobility myself, I’ve learned a lot from my own experiences. I especially enjoy meeting and training people with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS); I find it very rewarding as they often don’t get the right diagnosis or treatment from mainstream medicine.

My training addresses many issues linked to EDS. I’ve also kept my consultation and gym program prices low so that everyone can get the help they need.

If you’re facing a problem that seems impossible to fix, I’d love to meet you and help. Book a session today, and let’s find a solution together!

Scoliosis

Recent research from 2020 has found a strong link between scoliosis and the spinal Galant reflex. This reflex is present at birth and usually integrates as babies grow, especially when they spend time on their backs. However, in some children who sleep mostly on one side, the reflex may not integrate evenly, causing muscle spasms on one side of the spine and leading to scoliosis.

My scoliosis treatment focuses on integrating the spinal galant reflex. We stretch the tight muscles on one side and strengthen the weaker muscles on the other. This method has helped many of my clients achieve a naturally straighter spine through my training programs.

Hip Dysplasia

As someone who personally manages hip dysplasia through exercise, I know it’s often misunderstood. While babies born with hip dysplasia or individuals with repeated labral tears or significant cartilage damage might need to see a surgeon, many mild to moderate cases—and even some severe ones—can be corrected with targeted exercise.

When standing, much of the instability is at the front of the hip. By strengthening the muscles on the inside and at the back of the hip, we can help bring the hip into a more stable position. My method focuses on using these muscles to provide the necessary support and stability, improving overall function and reducing pain.

Dyspraxia

Dyspraxia is often associated with unintegrated primitive reflexes. As an RMTI (Rhythmic Movement Training International) instructor, I can help integrate these reflexes and activate and strengthen the muscles that are supposed to function correctly. By addressing the root cause of dyspraxia through targeted exercises and techniques, we can improve coordination, balance, and overall motor skills so you can feel much more confident.
